Aboriginal communities

Sunset along the Track West Beach, Esperance

Learn more about Aboriginal culture and customs before travelling around the great state of WA...

Many of the outback's original inhabitants lead lives that are still powerfully influenced by their ancient traditions; and naturally differ from the socially acceptable traditions and practices of those in the city.

Non Aboriginal people should respect these traditions; as they might expect Aboriginal people to reciprocate that same respect when visiting their own homes. Some of these customs will be almost incomprehensible to the average tourist; who may be unsure of Aboriginal social customs.

When visiting Aboriginal communities, please understand that the front area outside each dwelling is the occupants “private space”; a sort of outdoor living room. Please approach it carefully and respectfully. Park your vehicle at a reasonable distance (approximately 40m), as not to intrude on this space. Then alight the vehicle and wait for someone to come over to you.

It is not polite to drive in at considerable speed, and then turn around raising dust and taking photographs without permission.

Western society regards a firm handshake and eye contact as important in creating a favourable first impression. However, such gestures can be viewed as signs of aggression in Aboriginal society.

It is also important to remember that English is very much the second language within most remote communities. Please speak distinctly and reasonably slowly; using straight-forward English and a normal tone of voice.

Purchasing
Visiting an Aboriginal community presents an opportunity to purchase traditional paintings or other works of art directly from the artist; but bargaining is not their way. Prices asked are usually fixed, but are very reasonable. We suggest you respectfully agree or decline as you choose.

Alcohol

Most outback Aborigines have irregular access to alcohol, and only drink when they go to town. Many of their communities ban alcohol, so please respect the rules and regulations within the area.
