GASCOYNE MURCHISON OUTBACK PATHWAYS
The Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways Guidebook paints a colourful picture of the region – its history, nature and its charismatic characters. The 178-page full colour guidebook follows the paths of three self-drive trails through the Gascoyne-Murchison – the Wool Wagon Pathway, Miners Pathway and the Kingsford Smith Mail Run.
Miners Pathway
Journey into the past and discover adventure, history, and culture. The Miners Pathway is a 970 kilometre voyage commencing in
Paynes Find; visiting the townships of
Yalgoo,
Mount Magnet,
Cue,
Meekatharra, and
Sandstone. The nostalgic trail is revealing; exposing the legacy of the gold rush era and those men and women who ventured to these remote parts to claim their share of the riches. What remains today are abandon settlements, beautiful architecture, graveyards, and decaying machinery. Visitors will learn of the ancient nature of the rocks, the geological importance of the area, and of the native delicacy – bush tucker.
Most of the Miners Pathway roads are sealed and suitable for 2WD vehicles. The Miners Pathway is a remarkable journey.

Kingsford Smith Mail Run
The mail drivers who plied through the rugged outback are what Australian legends are made of. The most famous of these was Charles Kingsford Smith. Like all these mailmen, he was a vital link between lonely outposts. Discover for yourself the remarkable feat they performed by following the Kingsford Smith Mail Run. Follow the path that Charles Kingsford Smith took to complete his mail run from the Coastal town of
Carnarvon to Bangemall Inn at
Cobra Station; then link onto the current mail run that still delivers mail to stations between
Mt Augustus and
Meekatharra.
Mount Augustus is an iconic mark on the mail run. Stretching for 8 kilometres, the billion year old natural wonder is the world’s largest monocline; greater than Ayers Rock. Outback signage provides the dreamtime history surrounding the mount. This Pathway is mainly gravel roads and is therefore recommended for 4WDs.

Wool Wagon Pathway
This amazing inland path is the perfect way to travel up to the beautiful
Ningaloo Reef.
The Wool Wagon Pathway starts in Pindar (east of
Mullewa) and can be accessed from the Coast via
Geraldton; or inland via
Yalgoo.
Throughout the ages, Australia's prosperity has ‘ridden on the sheep's back’ and you can discover this legendary sheep country for yourself by following the Wool Wagon Pathway. Follow in the footsteps of generations of drovers before, and travel through the rugged Murchison; traditionally renowned for its quality wool. Reflect on the glorious days of the Australian wool industry; with its traditional Aussie Outback homesteads and huge shearing sheds that once catered for flocks of 20,000 sheep. Take in the natural wonders of the region; with fields of wildflowers in winter and spring, some of the oldest granite outcrops in the world, and native Aussie wildlife.
Sandalwood and Beefwood Trees adorn the route. Learn of the Indigenous culture, though interpretive signage, museums, and station stays.
